Wetheral
is ideally situated within the Eden Valley with its many delightful villages
and peaceful hamlets. Yet a half hour's drive into the Lake District finds
you at Bassenthwaite Lake (Osprey Country!) or the northern reaches of
Ullswater.
If you prefer history to stunning scenery, Hadrian's Wall is just on the doorstep; head east to find the finest Roman Heritage sites. To the west is the historic border city of Carlisle with its castle and red sandstone cathedral, which was founded in 1122, and is one of the smallest cathedrals in England.
Wetheral is a great base from which to explore the
Scottish borders, too, or you could forget the car and simply explore Wetheral.
A triangular village green, in the corner of which is the ancient Wetheral
Cross, leads you down past the 16th Century church to a spectacular sandstone
gorge carved through time by the River Eden. A little further through a
beautiful woodland walk you will discover St. Contantine's Cells, chiselled
out of solid rock in the 6th Century.
In the Middle Ages there was a priory in the village, but all that now remains is a gatehouse and some low ruined walls.
Acorn Bank is situated on the Scotby Road, opposite the entrance to Jennet Croft and next to Skelton House.
